Man on the Moon: The Voyage of the Apollo Astronauts
The greatest event of the 20th century is magnificently retold through the eyes and ears of the people who were there: 23 Moon voyagers and those who struggled to get the program moving. Basis for the HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon. Currently out-of-print, but worth looking for! A-OK!
Moon Shot; The inside Story of America's Race to the Moon Deke Slayton, Al Shepard
Shepard and Slayton team up with two veteran space reporters to produce a firsthand account of the space program's early days. The narrative is at its best when it focuses on the astronauts' flight experiences - Shepard's brief Mercury flight, his lunar landing mission ten years later, and Slayton's long-delayed trip into space aboard the last Apollo mission in 1975. Currently out-of-print, but worth looking for! A-OK!
Vostok 1: First Human in Space
The historic flight made by a Soviet cosmonaut in 1961 marks the beginning of our nation's obsession with space travel. The text makes interesting reading for the upper elementary student.
Deke!: US Manned Space: From Mercury to the Shuttle
One of the first seven Mercury astronauts, Slayton reveals his inside knowledge of how the US manned space program really worked. When the Air Force grounded him, he became the head of America's Astronaut Corps. He selected the crews who flew the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab missions.
